Confidentiality: Everything that passes between the client and the counsellor
will remain in the strictest confidence. All E-mails, transcripts etc. will be
destroyed upon completion of counselling.
There are however some exceptions to this rule that potential clients need to be
aware of.
In order too work ethically with clients counsellors need to be in supervision.
This means that the counsellor will employ the services of a highly qualified,
highly experienced, professional, counselling supervisor. Case notes will be
shared with the supervisor to ensure that the clients best interests are
being met. Details of a personal nature (names, addresses, E-mail,
phone numbers etc.) are never shared.
If the client discloses information where it becomes clear that the client
is a real and serious danger to themselves or others, then the appropriate
authority (GP, hospital, police etc.) will need to be informed.
This will always happen where the current physical or sexual abuse of a child
is an issue or where the client is currently and actively engaged in acts of
terrorism.
Having said that the client will be given every opportunity to contact and inform
the relevant authorities themselves.
